Statement on Garnet Fire Impacts to the Teakettle Prescribed Burn

On Thursday, August 28, 2025, the Garnet Fire reached the southern edge of the proposed perimeter for the Teakettle Prescribed Burn, placing the project under direct threat. The project – spearheaded by U.S. Forest Service research scientist Dr. Malcolm North and led and managed by the Climate & Wildfire Institute (CWI) – featured a planned 3,300-acre prescribed burn to reintroduce beneficial fire under safe, favorable conditions. Instead, the area is now burning in the midst of the Garnet Fire, which continues to unfold under far more challenging circumstances.

National Prescribed Fire Act Statement of Support

The Climate & Wildfire Institute (CWI) and The Stewardship Project (TSP), a project supported by CWI, are pleased to see the bipartisan introduction of the National Prescribed Fire Act. The National Prescribed Fire Act would establish key targets for prescribed fire, create critical workforce reforms and streamline actions across federal agencies.
